CAN names squad for SAARC U-25 T20

KATHMANDU, Oct 17: Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) on Monday named a 14-member Nepali U-25 cricket team for the First SAARC U-25 Twenty20 Cricket Tournament to be held in the Maldives from October 31 to November 7.

National team captain Paras Khadka and vice-captain Gyanendra Malla retain their positions in the U-25 squad also.

The team includes Mahesh Chhetri, Anil Mandal, Sharad Vesawkar, Amrit Bhattarai and Binod Bhandari. CAN has included seven players from the U-19 squad that qualified for the ICC U-19 World Cup. U-19 captain Prithu Baskota, Rahul BK, Naresh Budhaair, Pradeep Airee, Krishna Karki, Bhuwan Karki and Avinash Karna are also in the U-25 team.

"It will provide us opportunity to play good practice matches before participating in the ACC Twenty20 Cup in December," said captain Khadka. CAN had called up 22 players for a closed camp training last week for the ACC Twenty20 Cup, but senior players like Binod Das, Shakti Gauchan could not be included in the U-25 squad due to the age bar.

Though CAN has announced the squad, it is yet to name the coach for the U-25 team.

The tournament is being organized by the Cricket Board of Maldives on the initiative of the Government of Maldives as a means to foster greater relations among SAARC countries.

According to Maldivian media, Pakistan and Afghanistan have already confirmed their participation in the tournament. Maldives has been preparing the Fuvahmulah Cricket Stadium for the tournament.
